چکیده

The oxygen isotope fractionation factors between the hydration complex of the alkali ions in the gas phase and a free water molecule have been computed on the basis of the energy surfaces calculated by Kistenmacher, Popkie and Clementi for a water molecule in the field of an alkali ion. For comparison with recently measured oxygen isotope fractionation factors in aqueous alkali halide solutions, the gas phase values are multiplied with the corresponding separation factors between water vapor and liquid water thus relating the hydration complex in the gas phase with pure water. Qualitative agreement between computed and observed fractionation factors has been found for H 2 0 and D 2 0 even neglecting the isotope effect connected with the transfer of the hydration complex from the gas phase to the solution. This transfer effect is estimated for H 2 0 by a quantitative comparison of computed and observed oxygen isotope fractionation factors.

Hydration in solution is critical for stable oxygen isotope fractionation between carbonate ion and water

Various isotope studies require accurate fractionation factors (a’s) between different chemical compounds in thermodynamic equilibrium. Although numerous isotope systems involve aqueous solutions, the conventional theory is formulated for the gas-phase and predicts incorrect a’s for many compounds dissolved in water. Here I show that quantum-chemistry calculations, which take into account solut...

Hydrogen Isotope Fractionation in Aqueous Alkali Halide Solutions

The D/H ratios of hydrogen gas in equilibrium with aqueous alkali halide solutions were determined at 25 °C, using a hydrophobic platinum catalyst. The hydrogen isotope effect between the solution and pure water changes linearly with the molality of the solution at low concentrations, but deviates from this linearity at higher concentration for all alkali halide solutions. The magnitude of the ...

The D/H ratio of hydrogen gas in equilibrium with water vapor over aqueous lithium chloride solutions was measured at 25 °C, using a hydrophobic platinum catalyst. Experimental details are described. The hydrogen isotope effect between the solution and pure water depends linearly on the LiCl concentration up to ca. 12 m, and at higher concentrations a marked deviation from linearity takes place...

18O/16O and D/H Isotopic Preference in Hydration Spheres of Alkali Metal Ions

With the final goal set at theoretical elucidation of experimentally observed isotope salt effects, molecular orbital calculations were performed to estimate the 18 O/16 O and D/H isotopic reduced partition function ratios (RPFRs) of water molecules around lithium, sodium, and potassium ions. As model water molecules in the ith hydration sphere of the cation in aqueous solutions containing that...

A new value for the stable oxygen isotope fractionation between dissolved sulfate ion and water

Although the stable oxygen isotope fractionation between dissolved sulfate ion ðSO 4 Þ and H2O (hereafter aðSO2 4 –H2OÞ) is of physico-chemical and biogeochemical significance, no experimental value has been established until present. The primary reason being that uncatalyzed oxygen exchange between SO 4 and H2O is extremely slow, taking 10 5 years at room temperature. For lack of a better appr...
